LA INGESTA MODERADA DE VINO TINTO REDUCE EL RIESGO DE DEMENCIA SENIL Y DE LA ENFERMEDAD DE ALZHEIMER.

En el año 1907 el médico patólogo Alois Alzheimer, describe en una paciente de 51 años, un cuadro clínico caracterizado por un deterioro progresivo de la capacidad cognitiva (sensaciones, percepciones, etc), síntomas de lesiones cerebrales localizadas, alucinaciones, ilusiones y pérdida de la capacidad de integración psicosocial.

El estudio anatomopatológico muestra que esta enfermedad lleva consigo una destrucción de células nerviosas en la corteza cerebral y en el hipocampo – primera localización de la función de la memoria- a una velocidad muy superior a la que se produce en el proceso de envejecimiento fisiológico. El examen microscópico pone de manifiesto la presencia de un enredo u ovillo neurofibrilar y una estructura con la forma de placas seniles, constituidas químicamente por una pequeña proteína llamada beta amiloide, que algunos investigadores consideran como el principal signo neuroanátomico de la enfermedad de Alzheimer (E.A).

Las moléculas beta amiloide inicialmente se forman dentro de las neuronas como degradación de un precursor denominado APP (Amiloyde Precusor Protein) por la acción de la enzima Bace –1 que actuando a modo de tijeras forma la proteina b-amiloide, depositándola en el cerebro a manera de placas. Esta degradación es inducida por lo que se denomina estrés oxidativo, debido a la presencia de radicales libres.

La E.A es la cuarta causa de mortalidad, tras las enfermedades cardiacas, cáncer y la trombosis. La E.A está adquiriendo magnitud de proceso pandémico (pandemia silenciosa), hallando una persona de cada diez con más de 65 años, casi la mitad de las personas con más de 85 años y ocho casos de demencia cada 10 a los 90 años. Estos resultados epidemiológicos ponen de manifiesto un proceso preocupante en nuestra sociedad, y en lo que respecta a España, una de cada cuatro familias tienen al menos un familiar con demencia tipo Alzheimer,

La ingesta moderada de vino tinto, dos o tres copas/día para el hombre y una o dos copas/día para la mujer, lleva consigo efectos beneficiosos para la salud, como se ha venido observando desde hace unas décadas a través de estudios epidemiológicos y de investigación clínica. Los efectos beneficiosos que proporciona la ingesta moderada de vino tinto se podrían definir como de eno-prevención, es decir, disminuyen la incidencia de procesos patológicos muy comunes en nuestra sociedad desarrollada. Entre las enfermedades que de manera directa el consumo moderado de vino van a prevenir tenemos: los procesos cardiovasculares, aterosclerosis, trastornos del metabolismo de las grasas, procesos neoplásicos, accidentes cerebrovasculares (ACV), el envejecimiento celular y E.A

En el año 1997 el Dr. J M Orgogozo Profesor de Neurología junto con el Dr. J.F Dartigues Profesor de epidemiología, ambos de la de la Universidad de Burdeos, demuestran en un estudio realizado en residencias de la tercera edad, que las personas que ingieren de manera moderada en las comidas diariamente vino tinto, tienen menos riesgo para desarrollar demencia senil y la enfermedad de Alzheimer. El efecto beneficioso se achacó al aporte antioxidante de los compuestos fenólicos del vino tinto (resveratrol) evitando el estrés oxidativo y el daño celular. En la misma línea, el Prof Dr. Richard Mayeux de la Universidad de Columbia en N.Y. en el seguimiento a lo largo de cuatro años de 980 ancianos, observa que aquellos que consumieron hasta tres vasos de vino tinto al día redujeron su riesgo de padecer la enfermedad de Alzheimer hasta en un 45 por ciento. Un grupo de investigadores de la Universidad de Kuopio dirigidos por el Profesor Antt en Finlandia en un seguimiento a lo largo de 23 años en 1464 personas, hallaron que las que la ingestión de vino en exceso, tienen el mismo riesgo que los abstemios de padecer deterioro cognitivo y demencia en la vejez. En la misma línea de investigación el grupo del Profesor Marambaud del centro Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer´s Disease en Nueva York, observan que el resveratrol que se encuentra en grandes cantidades en el vino tinto, disminuye los niveles del péptido beta-amiloide en más de un 50 por ciento en ensayos experimentales básicos. Este efecto del resveratrol se anula por los inhibidores de la proteosoma, que es una proteína muy compleja que en unión de la enzima ubicuitina, producen la degradación de la b-amiloide dentro de las células neuronales, disminuyendo el amiloide cerebral y evitando la muerte neuronal. Por lo tanto, éstos resultados ponen de manifiesto que el resveratrol puede actuar reforzando la actividad de la proteosoma 26 S. disminuyendo la proteina amiloidea cerebral.

Los hallazgos de éstas investigaciones, y conociendo algunos de los mecanismos íntimos de acción biológica del resveratrol a nivel celular, nos permite, dado los conocimientos derivados de los estudios epidemiológicos actuales, el recomendar la ingesta moderada de vino tinto- si no hay contraindicación- en las personas que se hallan dentro del eufemismo de la tercera edad, con el fin de obtener con mucha probabilidad una eno-profilaxis, o bien, un elentecimiento en la aparición de la sintomatología de la demencia tipo Alzheimer.
