Original from Pasadena, California, and currently residing in New York, David Ebershoff lives his live surrounded by words, he is a writer, vice president and executive editor at Random House and he teaches in the graduate writing program at Columbia University. His first book, \u2018The Danish girl\u2019, published in spain by Anagrama, is inspired in the life of Einar Wegener, the first man to undergo a sex change operation. We asked him about this fascinating story and the great question that every author asks: what has to have a book to be published.<\/em><\/p>\n

When I first read about Lili Elbe many years ago I was struck by her courage, her imagination, her artistry, and her strong sense of self. I also wondered why someone so important in history \u2014 a true pioneer \u2014 wasn\u2019t more widely known. The more I learned about her life, and her significant role in LGBT history, I knew I wanted to write about her.<\/em><\/p>\n

For me, there are three important themes in Lili\u2019s life: identity, art, and love. Her life is a journey toward her true identity. Her life is also a story of art and how art and the act of creating allow us to become ourselves. And love is central to Lili\u2019s story: her wife loved her and reassured her and told Lili that to be herself she must also love herself.<\/em><\/p>\n

No hay receta o formula que lleve a un libro a su publicaci\u00f3n. De alguna forma no es diferente de lo que un lector piensa cuando est\u00e1 decidiendo que es lo siguiente que va a leer. Los publicadores est\u00e1n buscando buenas y originales historias; personajes convincentes; lenguaje y estilo vivo; y autores con una nueva manera de ver e interpretar el mundo. Mi consejo a todos los escritores es el mismo: encuentra una buena historia y cu\u00e9ntala de una forma que solo t\u00fa puedas.<\/p>\n

There is no recipe or formula for what will lead a book to publication. In some ways it\u2019s no different from what a reader thinks about when he or she is deciding what to read next. Publishers are looking for good, original stories; compelling characters; vivid language and style; and authors with a fresh way of seeing and interpreting the world.
