Original from Pasadena, California, and currently residing in New York, David Ebershoff lives his live surrounded by words, he is a writer, vice president and executive editor at Random House and he teaches in the graduate writing program at Columbia University. His first book, ‘The Danish girl’, published in spain by Anagrama, is inspired in the life of Einar Wegener, the first man to undergo a sex change operation. We asked him about this fascinating story and the great question that every author asks: what has to have a book to be published.

– ¿Por qué decidiste escribir sobre la historia de Lili Elbe?

– Why did you decide to write about the story of Lili Elbe?

Cuando leí sobre Lili Elbe por primera vez hace muchos años me llamó la atención su coraje, su imaginación, su habilidad artística y su fuerte sentido de sí misma. También me pregunté por qué alguien tan importante en la historia (una verdadera pionera) no era más ampliamente conocida. Cuanto más aprendía sobre su vida, y su importante papel en la historia LGTB, supe que quería escribir sobre ella.

When I first read about Lili Elbe many years ago I was struck by her courage, her imagination, her artistry, and her strong sense of self. I also wondered why someone so important in history — a true pioneer — wasn’t more widely known. The more I learned about her life, and her significant role in LGBT history, I knew I wanted to write about her.

– ¿Qué has aprendido sobre ella mientras escribías la novela?

-What have you learned about her while writing the novel?

Para mí, hay tres temas importantes en la vida de Lili: identidad, arte, y amor. Su vida es un viaje hacia su verdadera identidad. Su vida también es una historia sobre el arte y como el arte y el acto de creación nos permite convertirnos en nosotros mismos. Y el amor es central en la historia de Lili: su esposa la amaba y la tranquilizó y le dijo a Lili que para ser ella misma también debía de amarse a sí misma.

For me, there are three important themes in Lili’s life: identity, art, and love. Her life is a journey toward her true identity. Her life is also a story of art and how art and the act of creating allow us to become ourselves. And love is central to Lili’s story: her wife loved her and reassured her and told Lili that to be herself she must also love herself.

– ¿Cuáles son los elementos que tiene que tener un libro para ser publicado?

– What are the elements that needs a book for publication?

No hay receta o formula que lleve a un libro a su publicación. De alguna forma no es diferente de lo que un lector piensa cuando está decidiendo que es lo siguiente que va a leer. Los publicadores están buscando buenas y originales historias; personajes convincentes; lenguaje y estilo vivo; y autores con una nueva manera de ver e interpretar el mundo. Mi consejo a todos los escritores es el mismo: encuentra una buena historia y cuéntala de una forma que solo tú puedas.

There is no recipe or formula for what will lead a book to publication. In some ways it’s no different from what a reader thinks about when he or she is deciding what to read next. Publishers are looking for good, original stories; compelling characters; vivid language and style; and authors with a fresh way of seeing and interpreting the world. My advice to all writers is the same: find a good story and tell it in a way that only you can.
